CLASSICAL

Virtuoso Alison Balsom plays BACH. This is worth having..no question about that!

The young English vistuoso trumpet player Alison plays two well known concertos in her own brillant way...a recording to treasure!

This is a great collection of the trumpet in the Italian Baroque. Includes performances by Alison Balsom and and Crispan Steele-Perkins.

Wow- Sergei Nakariakov at 17 years of age playing with the highest level of trumpet virtuosity. This is really a stunning recording..not to be missed!

"Masters of the Trumpet"

True to its title this 2CD set is a collection of performances by a number of the 20th century's great trumpet artists. Great listening at a great price! Features many great players including- Maurice Andre, Adolph Herseth, Armando Ghitalla, Phil Smith, Don Smithers, Pierre Thibaud, John Wilbraham, Raphael Mendez

This is a collection of seventeen of the most well known pieces for trumpet and organ. Inspired performances by trumpet virtuoso Rolf Smedvig and the celebrated organist Michale Murray bring the music alive.

"CAPRICE,” Alison Balsom's latest recording is a collection of well- known pieces transcribed for trumpet and performed with charm, beauty and plenty of virtuosity. Balsom is a stunning virtuoso; she commands a huge register, a large range of dynamics and colors, and can achieve hair-raising speeds with ease, clarity and grace. This is her second CD; the first was an all-Bach album.

Here is finally a recording of Oskar Bohme' s concerto for trumpet and orchestra. This powerhouse piece is one of the rare concertos from the romantic period for the trumpet... this recording is worth the price for that alone but who doesn’t love Bach's Brandenburg #2 with the super high trumpet part or the Fasch concerto all played with chops to burn by the Pittsburgh Symphony's principal trumpet George Vosburgh.

Advice

This 2-CD compilation from four of Hardenberger's Philips releases include fine performances of baroque works with orchestra and organ, and the Classical era Haydn, Hummel and Leopold Mozart concertos. .

AdviceThese contemporary concertos (two of three have their world premiere recordings here) are virtuoso vehicles, challenging to the performer and listener alike. All masterfully performed by soloist and orchestra. Gruber's Aerial requires the soloist to play cow's horn, piccolo trumpet and c trumpet.

AdviceOne of the five volumes of the Baroque repertoire for trumpet, all impeccably performed on Natural (valveless) trumpet. Eklund is one of a handful of period instrument soloists whose execution is both technically excellent and musically satisfying.

IAdvicet is difficult to select a single recording from the output of the illustrious and prolific Maurice Andre, but this is a good place to start: Maurice in his prime, with rich orchestral accompaniment. These are not "historically informed performances" by any means, but they sound magnificent nonetheless.

Advice

Fine recordings of the Haydn and Hummel concertos that bear the stamp of Schwarz's very personal interpretation of the music: he was both the soloist and conductor for these sessions. These are among the earliest digital recordings of the late 1970s.

AdviceAn excellent recording by the young Russian trumpet phenomenon, this CD features beautifully performed transcriptions of music for strings, including lush versions of Tchaikovsky's Rocco variations, originally written for cello and orchestra, played on Flugelhorn.

Advice

Norwegian born virtuoso trumpet player, Ole Edvard Antonsen, beautifully performs all twelve pieces of George Philipp Telemann’s Heroic Music suite in this recording. This versatile trumpet artist has a number of solo recordings out including his recording of Shostakovich's Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings with the Berlin Philharmonic.

Advice

Mendez was a great artist who set out to have the trumpet respected as a concert solo instrument. This is one of at least a dozen CDs of re-released recordings by the incomparable trumpet virtuoso. Some of the selections have been remastered from 78RPM recordings so sound quality varies.

Advice

Smedvig's outstanding recording features the Haydn and Hummel trumpet concertos as well as trumpet solos by the Italian masters, Tartini and Torelli.

AdviceThis CD is not to be missed. With a beautiful sound and stunning phrasing, Armando Ghitalla was one of the most expressive musician's of the 20c. These recordings predate all the fancy digital editing done today. Ghitalla's performance here includes all first time recordings of works that have now become essential for any solo trumpet players repertoire.

AdviceThis CD features three late 20c. Trumpet concertos, all of which deserve to be performed often. Jacques Hetu's concerto is performed by Guy Few, Malcolm Forsyth's concerto by James Thompson and Dan Warren performs Phil Nimmon's concerto. All three concertos are masterly performed by these outstanding trumpeters.

Aubier's stunning performance is an education for any trumpeter. What makes this recording truly unique is that all of the piano accompaniments have been transcribed for orchestra. This CD includes: Intrada by Honneggerr / Concerto by Bacri / Semaine Sainte A Cuzco by Tomasi / Elegie by Escaich Etude #2 by Charlier / Suite by Schmitt / Concertino by Delerue / Legend by Enesco

Advice This recital style recording amply demonstrates Ray Mases's elegant and musical trumpet playing. His insightful and seemingly effortless performances often define how these modern works should be performed. Kent Kennan's popular Sonata for Trumpet and Piano is beautifully rendered here.

Advice"Trumpet Vocalise" is a well thought out collection of transcribed vocal songs which Mr. Mase masterly performs with polished lyricism. His performance demonstrates the beautiful singing qualities of the trumpet. Not to be missed.

AdviceThis collection of sonatas by father and son (Carl and Heinrich von Biber), including sonatas for solo and multiple trumpets, is beautifully performed and recorded. Gabriele Cassone is one of the top trumpet soloists in the world, in both ancient and modern repertoire. His performances here are no less brilliant.

Advice

Included in this complete collection of Luciano Berio's Sequenzas ( a series of pieces for solo instruments written over a period of nearly 40 years) Cassone's recording of Sequenza X for Solo Trumpet is without a doubt the definitive one, as his performance was endorsed by the composer himself.

AdviceA selection of works that have become contemporary standards for trumpet and organ, including Eben's Okna (Windows), Jolivet's Arioso Barocco, Hovhanness's Prayer of St. Gregory, Persichetti's The Hollow Men, and Plog's own Themes on Munch Paintings.

AdviceThis collection of works by Robert Erickson includes the definitive recording of his composition Kryl for unaccompanied trumpet. Kryl is played here by Edwin Harkins, for whom the piece was written, and the piece is clearly tailored to Harkin's uncanny rhythmic skills and inimitable sense of humor. Other recorded performances of this piece fall very short of the mark.

AdviceMarkus Stockhausen is a master of "Intuitive Music".

AdviceThis two CD set includes standard baroque compositions as well as important 20 c. works. The Baroque CD includes compostions by; Purcell, Corelli, Torelli, Telemann and others. The Contemporary CD: Includes trumpet solos by Peter Maxwell Davies, Andre Jolivet, Luciano Berio, Hans-Werner Henze and others. Superb performances from trumpeter Graham Aston.

AdviceBibi Black brilliantly performs four important Russian trumpet works with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra. The CD includes: Concertos by Alexander Arutiunian, Alexandra Pakhmutova and Mosei Vainberg and also includes Arutiunan's "Variations for Trumpet and Orchestra."

AdviceA wonderful collection of cornet solos from the most famous trumpeter in the world. Wynton gives us a virtuoso performance along with the fine accompaniment of the Eastman Wind Ensemble--band arrangements by Donald Hunesberger. This CD is a must for any collector who loves those great cornet solos.

JAZZ     | top |

AdviceThis latest CD from Ralph Alessi amply proves that he has made a place for himself in the jazzworld. "Look" is his third recording as a leader. Alessi's compositions can be moody, evocative and tender..the writing transparent, linear and both simple and complex at the same time. Alessi is an excellent tpt. player and the quintet playing is first rate. The group includes:Ravi Coltrane -Sax, Andy Milnes-Piano, Drew Gress-Bass and Gerald Cleaver-drums.

Jazz trumpeter Chris Botti is mostly exquisite on this concert DVD, which gives old fans and new arrivals a chance to hear him apply his rich, expressive playing to a number of old standards, as well as one or two of his own compositions.

Advice"When I fall in Love" makes a great backdrop to creating the "right mood." Beautiful standard classic songs played with love and grace. Botti follows in the tradition of cornet great Bobby Hackett. "When I Fall in Love" is currently Botti's fastest selling CD.

“Soft Lights” and “In A Mellow Mood.” Love songs played by the great Bobby Hackett. Two LPs reissued in one CD. Hackett’s lush sound and beautiful phrasing combined with stunning orchestrations and strings makes this one of the all time great “romance” recordings. This is Hackett's best romantic LP and this reissue combines all 24 tunes into one great package

AdviceHere, in Hargrove’s first acoustical recording since 2002, is a wealth of great improvising from the whole group but for jazz trumpet aficionados Hargrove is the one to listen to. His hard driving and fluid mastery of the changes is matched by a robust and bold sound, this guy can play in any style and he shows it amply well. This CD has a lot of solid tunes with fine harmonic motion, perfect vehicles for Hargrove’s impressive playing. Guest artist and trombone legend, Slide Hampton makes a masterful contribution on “A Day in Vienna”.

Advice This is Blanchard’s’ second CD for the highly regarded Blue Note jazz label. Blanchard amply demonstrates his abilities as a jazz player, composer and bandleader. Blanchard is well known as a composer and performer on a number of Spike Lee films, but here he is a jazz player of serious merit. He plays with a rich sound and deep soulfulness and his compositions grab your attention and heart. The ensemble playing is first rate. Herbie Hancok (piano), produced this recording and also plays on two tracks.

AdviceLouis Armstrong the Great! He is often called "Pops" by people in the "know." This is a collection of outstanding recordings made throughout his vast career. Louis claimed that he was "just an entertainer." That he was, of course, and so much more! The music and trumpet worlds owe a debt of gratitude to this great artist.

AdviceMiles Davis- the "Picasso of Jazz"- or was Picasso the Miles Davis of art? You get the point. It's hard to say where to start when listening to the recordings of an artist who was always moving into new musical territory. This collection is a gem.

AdviceBrian Lynch Wins 2007 Grammy Award for Latin Jazz.

Brian Lynch is a Jazz Master who plays in many styles. This recording is Hot Latin!

2007 GRAMMY AWARD CD "The Brian Lynch/Eddie Palmieri Project" featuring very special guests Phil Woods and Lila Downs. Great Latin Stuff. Only available from: http://www.artistshare.com

AdviceSo here is Brian Lynch playing standard tunes with the great Phil Woods. Brian seems to be able to sound great in any jazz style and here, he once again demonstrates that ability. Brian Lynch -Jazz Master.

AdviceErik Jekabson's latest New York CD, "Intersection," amply shows what this masterful improviser/composer can do. All original tunes and arrangements are by Jekabson with the exception of the last track, "You Go To My Head." We can expect to hear more from this young artist in the future.

Advice"Beyond Babylon" is innovative and exciting Jazz-Klezmer music which needs to be heard to be appreciated. Original music, passionate and masterful performances from Berlin based Trumpeter-Composer, Paul Brody. This guy is on fire!

AdviceOne of two historic volumes recorded live in 1954 at the famous Birdland jazz club in New York, Clifford Brown is captured playing in a group with Horace Silver and Art Blakey. This grouping was arguably the precursor of the Jazz Messengers, which developed into one of the premier "Hard Bop groups of all time.

AdviceA document of an all-too brief meeting of the two greats in Jazz, this recording catches Clifford Brown backing up Sarah Vaughan in a 1954 recording session. Brown gets some choice solo space on the recordings and Vaughan sounds great throughout- a lesson from one of the masters in accompanying vocalists.

AdviceArt Farmer had a very long and productive recording career. This classic recording includes an allstar cast:with Gigi Gryce, Philli Joe Jones, Duke Jordan and Art's brother, Addison, on bass.

AdviceArt plays his Flumpet in this recording. Never sitting still, we hear more of his original tunes as well as some standards. This is one of the last recordings he made.

AdviceFreddi Hubbard-

One of the greatest jazz trumpet players of all time. If you're interested in playing jazz trumpet and you haven't listened to this great artist carefully, you'd better start now. There are so many recordings to choose from, but "Ready for Freddie" is a great place to start.

AdviceAlthough he died at far too young an age, Fats Navarro had a great impact of bebop players of his time. It's too bad that he didn't leave a vast collection of recordings, but we do have this two CD collection of the great beboper, and it is not to be missed! The sessions include many of the finest players of the bebop era. This recording is a history in itself.

AdviceThis recording is considered a classic. Here we have two great players swinging away and having fun and the listner will too! Clarke Terry has such an original trumpet sound and style-he really is one of a kind and always a joy to listen to.

Advice"Sink or Swim"

Interesting and original tunes from this inventive and sensitive jazz artist. Carey weaves his way through the changes with a velvety sound while his arrangements hold your attention. Carey's writing can be fuge-like, straight ahead or chamber-like. It's always nice to hear from the younger generation and this CD won't disappoint you.

AdviceChet baker was one of the best lyrical jazz players of his era. This is a great example of the west coast jazz style.

AdviceGerry Mulligan and Chet Baker- these recordings are classics from a period when jazz was creating new sounds. This was a milestone group for sure.

AdviceLee Morgan was a one of a kind hard driving trumpet player. It's such a pity that Lee Morgan died at such a young age. But there are a number of great recordings of him. Even though this was recorded almost forty years ago, it's fresh sounding. Lee is another of those players that that any serious jazz student or afficiando needs to become familiar with.

AdviceThis is a super classic which was out of print for far too many years. If you wonder what ever happened to those great trumpet players of the big band era, well they ended up working in the Hollywood studios. Legendary LA composer Tutti Camarata decided to feature these studio giants. Great trumpet playing throughout this recording. Includes Conrad Gozzo's legendary recording of Trumpeter's Prayer.

AdviceConsidered one of the few who were able to translate the post-bebop innovations of saxophonist John Coltrane to the trumpet, Woody Shaw shines brightly in this landmark 1978 live recording form the Village Vanguard in New York. Highly regarded by fans of Shaw's music, this date is often cited as proof that jazz was not dead in the 1970s.

AdviceChocolate Armenteros is considered by many people to be the preeminent Cuban trumpet player from which all Latin trumpet players descend.

AdviceIf you had to choose from among Douglas's bands and projects, the Tiny Bell Trio would be a good point of departure. This small group finds its way nimbly through Balkan dance rhythms and arrives at very creative and, at times, humorous interaction. delightful improvised chamber music.

Advice

Here is Maynard lighting more fires with his trumpet. The CD includes: MacArthur Park / Eli's Comin'/ Ballad to Max / Chala Nata / L Dopa / if I thought You'd Ever change Your Mind.
